The anime that I should have dropped forever: 1-5

There is a such thing as dropping an anime forever. When I use the term ‘dropped,’ that means that’s the last I’ll see of that anime in my life. Dropping a show means the show in question has sapped any last traces of enthusiasm from my body, and keeps on sucking more enthusiasm even after I’ve dropped it. Even if I’m stuck on a deserted island with nothing other than a portable dvd player and a ‘Lucky Star’ box set, all I’ll ever be able to think of is how bad that dropped anime was. With this in mind, combined with the fact that I’m only 1 shitty series away from going insane, according to my psychologist, I’ve decided that I’m going to let out some stress, tell you about all the anime that I stupidly decided to keep on watching, even if it killed me, and advise that you not make the same mistakes.

Inspired by and half-trolling Scamp’s post at The Cart Driver.

Akikan!

Total episode count: 12

Why I kept watching it: No idea. Maybe it was because I, as a beginning blogger, felt I had to finish it.

Why I should have dropped it: The art. The animation. The sound. The story. The characters. The humor. BUDOKO’S VOICE. Everything about it sucked. Its only saving grace was that it sucked so much that it became funny.

Blood+

Total episode count: 50 (and that’s no typo)

Why I kept watching it: I thought Saya would get cooler. And more powerful. But NOOOO, she had to be 100% weaksauce until the very last episode. In the end, it was painfully realistic. Saya, a human-ish Chiroprpateteteopad, was as weak as her loser brother, and never got any stronger.

Why I should have dropped it: Don’t you see that 50 episode count up there? That’s twenty hours wasted on this disappointing show! Girls may like it for the bishounen vampire-things, but I am not a girl, Saya and Diva were not attractive, and… well, this action show had no action. There’s a reason why Haji has 850 favorites on MAL while Saya has (miraculously) 470 or so.

Chrome Shelled Regios

Total episode count: 21 (out of 24)

Why I kept watching it: Actually, I dropped this show. But at 21 out of 24 episodes, that’s practically watching the entire thing. I watched this show for Felli. Felli never took a major role. Thus I dropped this show.

Why I should have dropped it [sooner]: The godawful character designs (especially the noses), the egregious lack of Felli, and the fact that Layfon (Layton? What the hell is his name?) starts out ridiculously strong. Shounen anime are all about overcoming struggles. TOO BAD LAYFON (Layton?) HAS NO STRUGGLES, because he is just so damn strong! There are no true “training” scenes because he doesn’t need any training. There’s no drama because we all know he can’t ever lose! What kind of a show does this?

This show is like Blood+. Wait, scratch that. Saya had somewhere to go, but never got there. Layfon had nowhere else to go because he hit the top. One-sided battles aren’t fun to watch, and neither was Regios.

Eiken

Total episode count: YYYYYY

Why I kept watching it: YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Why I should have dropped it: YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

FLCL

Total episode count: 6

Why I kept watching it: Obligatory.  That’s the only reason.  Basically, if you haven’t seen FLCL, you’re not fit to run an anime blog.  Though in my case, I’m still not fit to run an anime blog.  Huh.

Oh, and it was only 6 episodes, so I said, “Hey, why not?”

Why I should have dropped it:

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH classic BLAH growing up BLAH

The only thing that grew while I watched this anime was my desire to drop it.  It may be a classic, but I don’t see why.

It’s really, really, really boring.

____________________________________________

Well, that sums up my first post on the anime that I should have dropped forever.   Some shows should be given a second chance.  Others shouldn’t be given a second chance.  These shows shouldn’t even be given a first chance.

Moral of the day: If you feel like a series you’re watching sucks, don’t keep watching it.   Chances are the people who say it’s good are retarded and/or retardederer.

  1. LOL I actually tried watching FLCL FOUR TIMES OVER FOUR YEARS. I just kept dropping it, because I was indeed very bored. Last year I finally finished it. It did NOT rock my world.

    • glothelegend says:

Eiken was only a two episode OVA, wasn’t it?

Nevertheless, it sucked a lot. Akikan was good….through 6 episodes, then it sucked, including the worst episode ever created in anime history (that filler episode).

I did, however, like FLCL a lot, and thought that Blood + was pretty good. It took me about 40 episodes before I realized that D.Gray Man was never going to get semi-decent/bearable to watch.

    • fangzhao says:

      @ghostlightning
I just can’t understand WHY people hold FLCL in such high regard. It’s not funny, not interesting, and not deserving of a “classic” status.

And the “crazy antics” deal is in so many anime nowadays that FLCL doesn’t seem special.

      @glothelegend
Eiken was only two episodes, but those were two really painful episodes. As a guy who hates ecchi to begin with, I can’t understand why I even chose to watch the entire show.

Akikan was good until we realized it was trying to bring some seriousness into the story. Then it just went way, way downhill.

I hate FLCL and Blood+ because nothing really happens. FLCL is like your average comedy minus the comedy, and Blood+ is like your average action show minus the action. D:

Never watched D.Gray Man, though. I heard it was good, but I often hear things are good…

      • glothelegend says:

The anime is pretty much all shitty filler bullshit. The manga for D.Gray Man is apparently really good but I’ve been too traumatized by the crappiness of the anime to even think about starting the manga.

        • fangzhao says:

I’ll take your word for it, then! I’ve never been a big fan of long (more than 26 episodes) series, and it’s a miracle that I actually finished Blood+…

  2. RP says:

I only lasted three episodes with Regios. I started watching for Felli. But 2 minutes of Felli screentime and 60 minutes of crap later, I couldn’t put up with it anymore. If they ever release a best-of-Felli OVA, I’ll give it a shot.

Also agreed re: FLCL. I kept waiting for something cool to happen. Waited and waited… and nothing ever happened.

    • fangzhao says:

God, you’re smart. I should’ve realized no more Felli was on the way by the third episode, but I still held on to my dreams…!

FLCL was a sleeper hit. And by sleeper, I mean it made me fall asleep. I think one of the last lines of FLCL went like “everything is the same.” They sure weren’t kidding.

      • npal says:

I kept watching Regios for the girls, finished watching for the girls, the girls were delicious, the end :p

Other than that, Layfon was lulz, not because he pwned everything, but because he pwned everything WHILE being lulz.

I’d watch it again for the cuties though.

  3. Blood+ was good, but it’s definitely one of the shows that run long and offer a tepid ending. A shame too since there was so much that it had to offer.

Also, I can’t view Akikan in any other light but as a huge joke. Were there people who took that show seriously after the IT’S SHOW TIME!!! bit?

    • fangzhao says:

Blood+ should’ve been 24 – 26 episodes. It just went on and on and on, and the finale was so… hmmn. I’d like to say predictable here, but it was more… unpredictably predictable. I could see a deus ex machina-ish ending coming from a mile away, yet I still thought Saya would pull something out of her sleeve…

Akikan was a troll show. When it tried to be “serious,” nobody cared because we all just wanted more gags. Bah.

      • npal says:

I thought I’d drop Akikan from ep 1. I stalled it for some time, then I thought, what the hell, might as well watch it.

It wasn’t that horrible… I mean… It’s not like I expected to watch something great, not that Akikan really tried to look serious anyway, it was mostly girls, an idiot and some gay old man.

I’d still watch Akikan a second time than have to bear even one more ep of Qwaser’s “suck boobs for boost” lulz.

        • fangzhao says:

Seikon no Qwaser is a terrible show. I watched the first episode, and wanted to keep watching (despite the disgusting censored boobfest) because of the gothic loli in the ED. And then the second episode just rotted my brain. I think I gave it a 2/10.

Akikan started off pretty good, and then I found myself just looking for the terrible animation errors, because they were funnier to me than the jokes themselves.

But yeah, Shitkon shit Shitser was pretty damn bad. Akikan was bearable.

  4. kadian1364 says:

So I thought this was a partial troll/parody post ’til I got to the end, when I realized it was 100% trolling.

Are we even talking about the same show? Even if you didn’t ‘get’ FLCL, how can say its boring with a straight face? It smashes your head with a bass guitar until robots come out of your nose! It’s completely nuts!!

  5. kluxorious says:

Not gonna lie but those shows up there has been in my on-hold list since forever. Maybe I should just call it quit. But… why do I always feel so damn guilty about it? >_<

    • fangzhao says:

Haha, I used to have a huge on-hold list until I realized that I really didn’t want to keep watching those shows.

Don’t feel guilty! Just because you think a “good” show sucks doesn’t mean you’re wrong! 😀

I often feel that I have to watch some shows, but I end up dropping them since they do not suit my tastes at all. No matter how “good” they may be.

  6. Kairu says:

I feel the same on FLCL too. I remember watching it ’cause yeah.. I feel that it’s obligatory and everyone’s liking it. I watched it until episode 2 or something, I dropped it and made a post about me dropping FLCL. And all the comments I got are saying that I should go watch it again. So I was stupid enough to follow them, I continued watching it but still, it’s very ‘drop-able’ for me. To sum this none sense comment up, FLCL IS NOT GOOD.

  7. Razleplasm says:

I thought Regios had somewhere to go when I was watching it. I thought that it was impossible to have no destination in an anime, but I was wrong. The characters were the only entertaining part of this. Seriously, I could have spent that time watching a better series.

As for FLCL, I dropped it so many times that I couldn’t believe that I was watching a 6 episode show. The only entertaining episode was the last. It was only 6 episodes though, so I don’t regret watching it.

    • fangzhao says:

Chasing the Regios dream, huh? That show had no redeemable qualities save for Felli, and they were too stupid to include more of the only character anybody liked.

FLCL is one of those shows that isn’t downright awful or good. It was kind of interesting (heck, it has to be, given all the effort put into making it interesting…), but it was ultimately an average show. Average shows are the worst. Some people say they’re great, others say they suck, and you ultimately have to watch the entire thing to deliver your own verdict (and by then, you’ll be bored to death anyway).

  8. Baka-Raptor says:

Agreed on FLCL. Haven’t seen Eiken or Regios.

Blood+ was excellent through the first half. Then it dropped the action in revved up the drama. Too much time was spent on Saya sleeping and The Schiff having feelings. Still wouldn’t drop it though. No way I could be satisfied dropping it after watching the first half.

Akikan had some hilarious jokes. “What’s the difference between senzuri and paizuri?”

    • fangzhao says:

Heck, I would’ve liked Blood+, drama and all, if it just had a decent ending. But no, Diva just had to kick the bucket in the lamest way possible. It wasn’t even dramatic. It was stupid.

Akikan did have some shining moments. Too bad they were diamonds in a pile of shit. D:<

  9. ojisan says:

FLCL was one of the first anime I watched (barring Akira & a few Miyazake movies) and I know nothing about it, little about anime, and had no expectations. And I absolutely loved it, turned into an anime fan, and eventually into the elderly weeaboo I am today.

Bored, cynical children – you’ll never know the true pleasures of FLCL. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

  10. Taka says:

    Maybe FLCL is better dubbed?

Though I honestly can’t see how it’s the least bit boring. The robots come out of peoples heads then they fight…it happened in like every episode. They didn’t do nothing. The dude gets swallowed and used as a projectile for said crazy robot. Music was awesome, I mean it was the pillows how could it not be. The animation is quality. The characters kinda suck I’ll give you that, the most interesting one was Haruko. Whole show was on crack though.

  11. They’re all, except for Akikan (and Eiken? LOLz) are on my on-hold list . . . The premise of Akikan is already too stupid. I just checked out the first episode out of curiosity and my first impression of it had been right . . .it’s really crap =_=

As for the others . . .hhhmm . . . I’ll see for myself. Though I admit they hadn’t been as good as I expected/hoped them to be from what the episodes I’ve seen so far . . .

    • fangzhao says:

I actually thought Akikan’s premise was okay. Not really original, but nothing that bad. But the animation just set a horrible first impression for me. To date, it’s the most horribly animated anime I’ve seen.

  12. Panther says:

21 episodes of Regios wtf? I saw one and I dropped it right there and then.

None of the rest I even bothered looking at or are in my to-watch.

  13. Scamp says:

I am both strangly honoured and highly amused by this post.

It’s shows like these that have left me with a giant dropped list. After sitting through crap like Futakoi, Onegai Teacher, Fruits Basket and so on, I developed a very quick drop routine.

FLCL is still teh shiz though, and I’m not even an oldfag

    • fangzhao says:

I’m glad that you feel this way! It took a while to find a header picture similar to your post’s (Misuzu with open arms). I rarely pick up shows that I’ve dropped (Bakemonogatari is actually the only one so far, but I’m planning on taking another look at TM 8.0), so I couldn’t think of anything to say to your post (and thus this post was born!). (parentheses overload!)

YES. Fruits Basket is utter crap (haven’t seen the other two), but I got through the whole thing for some reason…

I hate it when people say “give _____ a second chance, it’s really good.” If it were really good, then I wouldn’t have dropped it in the first place!

      • Scamp says:

That was my idea for writing the post. I normally have that idea that ‘I dropped it because it was crap’ but when my list started to reach 100 dropped titles I started to think that there must be a few in there that deserve a second chance.

I’m also really surprised for all the FLCL hate. I watched it about 2 years ago and I loved the thing so I don’t think it’s aged anywhere near as bad as people seem to suggest it does. In fact, I still haven’t seen anything manage that level of organised randomness since.

        • fangzhao says:

100 is certainly a lot of dropped titles, but I’m at 70 something and I don’t want to see most of them again. I dropped a few due to time restraints (I really want to watch Cross Game, but 50 episodes….), but I know I had a pretty good reason to drop the other ones (in fact, I remember exactly how each of them sucked), so I don’t see myself returning to them anytime soon…

As for level of randomness…. I think there are several (at least) shows that have exceeded FLCL in that. It may not have the same art craziness (especially FLCL’s manga shots, which I thought very, very stupid), but Gintama is certainly as creative as FLCL (and arguably a hell of a lot funnier). Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo also match FLCL’s randomness, and Dokuro-chan and Dai Mahou Touge are pretty damn random as well.

  14. lelangir says:

I finished FLCL but it did bore me considerably.

  15. DS says:

I’m surprised at all the hate for FLCL. And to think, when it first came out it seemed more intense than anything before it… shockingly intense and manic. Now it puts the young ones to sleep… who knew!

  16. fangzhao says:

Okay. I’m not replying to all these FLCL comments one by one anymore.

    My stance: INTERESTING =/= GOOD.
FLCL may have random stuff going on all the time, but I could care less because I got bored. Interested, yet bored. Is this a paradox? I don’t know, but that’s what I felt.

FLCL pulls out all the stops to make every scene mean something or appear interesting, but it simply was an average show for me. Interestingly boringly average.

Shit, I don’t know what I’m talking about anymore.

P.S.: Also, that spiel about FLCL being outdated. These two points pretty much sum up my position on the show.

  17. D-DIDJAH SEE FLCL DUBBED?!?! =O

  18. Taka says:

Oooh oooh me! I did and had no idea what was going on.

    Also:
    I finished Akikan
    and
    Chrome Shelled Regios
    AND
am sort of hoping a 2nd season will come down the pipe since they ended in the middle of a cliffhanger and answered 0 questions.

but I mean it’s typical shonen. Layfon is strong from the beginning just like all shonen heroes. A shonen hero might “grow” in strength but it’s always in proportion to whoever they are fighting. Why do we watch when we always know they are going to win? For me I just like to vicariously crush weaklings.

As for series I watched the most of before dropping.

Death Note – 28/37 (yeah yeah I may watch the rest someday)
Asura Cryin’ – 10/13 (I think I may have finished the first season and forgotten to update but there’s no way I’m goin back to look now)
Kanamemo – 8/10 (in sheer ratios this would be 3rd nothing ever lived up to the singing episode)

That being said I’ve got a lot of 26+ episode series I just dropped around halfway through. Telepathy Shoujo Ran, Kurokami, Pandora Hearts, Zettai Karen Children a quarter of the way through, and many others. http://myanimelist.net/animelist/taka&status=4&order=0

    • fangzhao says:

Chrome Shelled Regios: Not really. Usually, shounen leads start off weak, then level up (Luffy, Ichigo, Goku, etc.). The problem is, Layfon never grows. He starts off ridiculously strong, to a point where there’s no suitable enemy for him because he’d beat them in two seconds flat.

Death Note went way downhill after _ died. I can’t blame you for dropping that show, heheh.

Usually, I drop shows after a few episodes (1 – 5), but I stupidly cling to the ones I’ve mentioned…

  19. emailbox says:

    Page stretch win.

  20. Canne says:

To think that I almost decided to start Chrome shell regios only a while back. I knew I felt something was wrong about it.
Regarding Blood+, I thought it was pretty decent and Saya actually got somewhat stronger during the end. But the middle part was really slow, I must admit.

    • fangzhao says:

Regios was pretty good in the beginning, before I realized there would be no more Felli and Layfon would win everything with ease.

Saya definitely did get stronger at the end, but not enough. Maybe I’m just too used to seeing mainstream shounen power-ups…

  21. fly84 says:

hmm, must be some good shit I’m on for really digging Regios. Must be honest that it all got way more interesting in the last 3 episodes! And now I’d really like a second season actually… Something about fonfon’s reiatsu that reached up to a few miles that really had me that scene, plus, how many times do you see a guy snowboarding in mid-air on a combo-sword 😕

    • fangzhao says:

Maybe it did get better in the last three episodes, but I really couldn’t take it anymore. Between the training sessions with shoujo sparkles in the background and Layfon’s ridiculous power level, I found myself laughing more than anything else.

  22. Janette says:

Fabulous parody of Scamp’s post. High five.

  23. An says:

FLCL or tons and tons of lame, stupid and ecchi animes… I vote for FLCL 😉

Maybe you cant have a blog if you didnt see that show, but you cant be a semi-smart person if you like k-ON or Seikon no Qwaser over FLCL, they are just retarded as 90% of anime shows!! xD

    • fangzhao says:

Comparing FLCL to lame, stupid ecchi anime is like comparing Fruits Basket to Seikon no Qwaser! It’s obvious which is better, but that doesn’t mean they can’t both be bad!

K-ON! and Seikon no Qwaser are indeed some pretty bad series (though I’m pretty sure there are some out there who’d take K-ON! over FLCL any day… stupid fanboys…)

      • An says:

Truth, but believe me my friend, it isnt a bad show. Sure, you can find it boring, why not, but “bad” is another thing. Characters are complex, situations are bizarre, animation is excellent as well as the designs. Im not gonna tell you “you dont like ir cause you didnt understand it”. Hell, I didnt understand it xD.
One thing is “i dont like it” and another is “its a bad show” 😉

  24. Lero says:

Haji and Solomon, pretty good characters in a bad series. Poor guys, they died for an emo-girl.

  25. Leyent says:

    I liked K-ON.
The anime managed to come off as somewhat likeable (if not very interesting), in a photo album reminiscence kind of way that depicts a pretty fun type of relationship that can never really exist between guys.
Myself and the majority of viewers I’ve heard blam the hell out of the show included.

Conclusion : I liked it because it was nice. Like reading an educational book on birds, or learning to play the flute.
Nothing to write home about, but it was still nice.
    The end.

    • fangzhao says:

K-ON! was… not that good, IMO. I think it was the exact opposite of your description.

Kyoto Animation used moe to appeal to the masses, and just ramped it up from there, stripping the show of everything but its moe elements.

  26. deep valley says:

embrace character driven plots, and can continue as copulation simulations.<a

  27. MkMiku says:

FLCL is soooooooo overated. I haven’t finished Chrome Shelled Regios, but I’m liking it so far. ^_^ Oh no, I’m on ep 11 of Blood+. Should I drop it? You watched Eiken? LOLOLOLOL Worst anime ever! XD
