The Greatest Anime of All Time 01

I can't get enough of this face.

If you’ve read my blog before, you probably already guessed that I wouldn’t let Omni one-up me on blogging The Greatest Anime of All Time (some less faithful souls might call it “To Aru Kagaku no Railgun” or “A Certain Scientific Railgun”).

Thus I will be blogging this series from start to finish, trying to be as unbiased as possible and not letting my “must spam pictures of goddess” instincts get the better of me.

Let’s start with the cons of this first episode:

  • Kuroko is too close to Mikoto
  • No plot
  • I am jealous
  • Shitty internet connection made my first leecher status into 600th seeder status (in other words, it took me two painful hours to torrent this)
  • Nothing

So in other words, I really liked this first episode.  Sure, the yuri themes were coming on strong throughout the entire thing, but as a slice of life introductory episode, it’s top notch (what’s better, this or “chocolate cornets”?).

This episode really reminds me of the first episode of Natsu no Arashi (or if you haven’t seen that, Yokuwakaru Gendaimahou… but if you haven’t seen that either, just think of “anime with very non-sequitur first episode), except that it’s actually good.  The problem with NnA was that nothing really happened.  The first episode was a bore because everything was so slice-of-life without any plot that they might as well have titled that episode “confusion.”

However, this episode (re-)introduced us to Mikoto and Kuroko, and the new characters, Ruiko and Kazari, in a better timeframe.  Instead of going completely slice-of-life (where everything literally is a normal day in their lives – they all know each other and their backgrounds are never explained), To Aru Kagaku no Railgun’s first episode introduces us to the characters and explains their backgrounds in the context of a “normal” school day – which really isn’t, since the characters first meet each other in the episode.

In other news, the new characters are really interesting.  I’m really curious as to how a level 1 got into Judgment, and what she and her level 0 friend can add to this anime.  So far, we haven’t seen a true level 0 in the To Aru world, and I’m really intrigued.  Maybe she’ll try to make up for her lack of powers with random acts of “cool”ness like the one we’ve seen in this episode?

However, these new characters might be somewhat of a liability.  Their low-level powers might set the stage for a slice-of-life anime (obviously, I haven’t read the manga, so I have no idea what’s going to happen) instead of a more plot/action-oriented one.

But if you really want what to hear what I want to say,

This is the best anime of all time, and you all know it.  Don’t deny it.  You know anime can’t get better than this.

haha WTH is going on in that last picture?!

  2. Guy says:

You’ve seen a true level 0 which wasn’t a magician or Touma… their teacher. The loli teacher.

  3. TJ says:

Lol are you going to keep referring to this show as the Greatest Anime of All Time?

It’s good to see Mikoto back, but as you’ve said this episode had no plot and too much Kuroko antics.

  4. glothelegend says:

God damn it. I was going to wait for this anime to finish before I started watching it, but I hear one God damn thing about it and now I have no choice but to watch.

I loved the episode but for some reason Kuroko’s voice ticks me off. Or I fail to see the beauty in her voice.

  6. […] I don’t think the number of episodes has yet to be announced yet, but I do hope it’s a full 24. Oh and I totally agree with fangzhao, this is definitely the greatest anime of all time. Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)20 reasons why you should watch Mikoto and her To […]

I already mentioned this, but I sacrificed sleep to watch a live stream of this show, and it was worth it. Yeah, there isn’t much of a story in this episode, but the level-upper arc should be starting soon. Hopefully next episode…

    • moritheil says:

Wow, that’s one hell of an endorsement. There are few things I will miss sleep for (deadlines and cons among them.) I’ve never considered a live stream to be in those ranks.

    • fangzhao says:

Gah! I saw your tweet about staying up, but I never knew you watched a live stream!

Sleep is nothing compared to The Greatest Anime of All Time, yo.

  8. BedaBeda says:

Mikoto is back! Anyone else notice Shana and Yoshida waiting in the crepe line?

I laughed aloud at this episode several times, because it was just so blatant: The camera pointing at “Shower Room,” Mikoto deciding to take matters into her own hands when she sees a woman being hurt… They have this pandering down to a fine, fine art.

Not that I’m complaining. Laughter heals the soul, and it was quite entertaining to watch.

  12. Roy Mustang says:

The animation quality is smoother and a notch above Toaru Index. They handled the action scene quite well.

But this show seems to be missing A Certain Something. I can’t quite put my finger on it…

What’s that thing on the left? It looks kind of annoying…

        Common calm down yourself =_=U
I’m sure that if Index notice that she can use magic, she can destroy te entire city with those freakin powers.
Because she is h4x, she had a minor plot rol in the light novels, just like Mikoto, both of them since the first and third arc respectively become plotless characters, specially Mikoto. And beacause she is a popular character in order to stop the Mikoto fans bothering around, he gives to them a spin off.
        There is 18 LN of Index and Mikoto doesn’t have, until now, a relevant rol…. that fact reminds me Himegami Aisa…. e_e;

Attacking other characters doesn’t help to make shine your favorite ones, thats childlike.
        You remind me Serenade Beta…

So is anyone even still watching this garbage?
