Summer 2009: First Impressions (One Sentence each)
Posted: July 10, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized 13 Comments »This seems to be a much better season than Spring 2009, which was much better than Winter 2008. I’m pretty inexperienced at these things, but is it always like this, with fall being the climax of the year (because fall 2008 certainly was better [on the whole] than the rest of 2008)?
Needless
Darker than Shakugan no Cardcaptor Lagann seems pretty nice for a maybe-parody, maybe-shitty stereotypical shounen show with an interesting ED (to say the least).
6/10
CANAAN
I wasn’t that interested in this beforehand, and now I’m kind of interested… though this episode felt like a big set up for failure to me – I don’t know why.
7/10
Princess Lover
With a shitty title like that, humongous breasts like those, Queen’s Blade censoring like that, etc., you’d expect this to be one horrible anime… but it’s not – rather, episode one’s somewhat of a toned down version of Hayate no Gotoku!: funny, awesome, and an amazing intro.
8/10
Umi Monogatari: long subtitle blah blah
[has not watched episode 2 yet] Likeable characters, likeable loli, likeable art style, chibi done right and placed at the right time, loli, good humor, cute loli, etc. make this a very likeable show, though only time will tell if it can evolve into something more or degenerate into something less.
7/10
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
[has watched episode 2] Awesome – a very nice successor to Higurashi, and an incredible anime in its own right. (UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU isn’t as appealing as, say, something like uguu~ though.)
9/10
Bakemonogatari
The beginning with all the obligatory introduction junk was pretty boring, but after it picked up a little, I started to get really interested.
8/10
All other anime: I don’t feel like watching any other anime until after I finally finish E7, so first impressions/first+second [episode] impressions of other anime like Zan SZS that have been rotting in my Anime folder for a while will come out in a week.
You can blame my one-sentence first impressions not on innovative first-impression format, but on my laziness to type anything more than a sentence for each anime.
I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Princess Lover, except I need to find time to get around to it. And with that in mind, I think my overall favorite first episode belongs to Bakemonogatari with all the interesting dialogue that they threw at us from the get-go.
Still hoping that Tokyo Magnitude and Spice and Wolf turn out to be winners on top of all that.
I couldn’t get past 5 minutes of Princess Lover. I know I should have given the show a chance but it just bored me. Maybe later.
I found Needless needlessly… boring.
>Needless
Needless fails to attract me. However, I did like the Kamina and Yoko.

>CANAAN
I need time to watch this one… Err… Maybe later.
>Princess Lover
(Saber + Moka + (most likely) badass male character + maid) / Hop, step, jump = WIN = Princess lover! Though I agree that the title does sound lame and gives you a vibe that it will be a horrible anime.

>Umi Monogatari
I don’t feel an ounce of interest in this one.
Title: Umi – Umineko + Monogatari – Bakemonogatari = Umi Monogatari
>Umineko no Naku Koro ni
UUUU~ Ishh Awesome! I hope that this will become better at the time when the battle of wits start.
>Bakemonogatari
Loved it. But… How they dare put the loli in the likes of Baldy…
–
Some other shows you probably haven’t watched.
>ZSZS
I’ve never felt despair in watching the first episode.
>ELEMENT HUNTERS
Despair.

I just like the GARRRRR in Needless. Not gay though.
And Princess Lover is ok. As long as they don’t go overload on the jiggling.
Darker than Shakugan no Cardcaptor Lagann
== Haha! I didn’t think that that many series had parodies in NEEDLESS xD Haha.
Bakemonogatari – Shaft weirdness to the max
Umi Monogatari – episode 3 got boring
Umineko – Gore!!!! and Uuuuu!!!
Canaan – best debut of the bunch
My plan is to watch Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I’ll also watch Mushishi since everyone seems to be talking about it.
Princess Lover – Shugo Chara with breasts. Somewhat poor character designs. Decent Story.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – Ugly characters. Emo lead.
Sora no Manimani – Well animated. Interesting story. Upperclassman Loli. Moe Moe Kyun Seal of Approval.
I think Sora no Manimani will be the hit of this season.
@zzeroparticle
Bakemonogatari had a pretty good first episode, though I actually liked its sea counterpart’s first episode more (despite my scores).
I’ve yet to see Zan SZS, Spice and Wolf II, etc., though, so I doubt Umi Monogatari will hold the spot of “best first episode this season” for long.
@omisyth
Eh. If you can’t get past five to ten minutes of a show, I’d say give it up. There’s no way I’m going to relive Kanamemo 01 because somebody tells me that yuri + loli + BORING = success.
@nekosasu
Bah. You just don’t know the finer points of stupidity!
@simplybill
I’ve got to watch ELEMENT HUNTERS then. So far, I’ve ranked Kanamemo as the worst anime this season. I want to see if anything can beat a show that I dropped after five minutes.
@Seinime
Needless is needlessly gar, I’d say. I hope it doesn’t go overboard with it.
Princess Lover… I’m all for DFC, but the girls here look pretty good. I’m with you on restraining the jiggling.
@Sapphire Pyro
Heheh. I’m pretty sure that a few of those I just made up… but those really look like the Clow Book and Alastor!
@TJ
Hey, I love SHAFT weirdness. Goku SZS’s OPs are my favorite OPs of all time!
As for Umi Monogatari… I just watched episode 2, and it still seems all right. Though I’ll take your word for 03 and put it at the bottom of my priority list.
UUUUU!
CANAAN seemed pretty ordinary to me, really. I didn’t even feel anything from the “visual feast” that others were awed by.
@PR
But Mushishi isn’t currently airing! D:
@Roy
Eh. Shugo Chara is 110% more shojo than Princess Lover, though the rest still stands.
I’ve yet to watch Sora no Manimani and TM 8.0, so I can’t really say much on those.
I wasn’t all that impressed with Tokyo magnitude episode 1 but episode 2 blew me the hell away.
I just watched episode one, and it seems all right. Not particularly outstanding, but you really can’t expect much from an episode that shows the stuff leading up to the only real event in the show…
Despite your praise of episode two, I’m going to hold off on that for a while. Episode one didn’t impress me, and I have quite the anime backlog to get through. D:
