Four not necessarily horrible, but certainly useless and annoying characters

HEY! LOOK! LISTEN!

There are shitty characters like Suzaku, hated characters like Makoto, and then there’s those annoying, useless characters like these four.

Useless Man from Blood+

I’ve hated this guy ever since his ugly mug popped up on screen for the first time.  What exactly does he do in the series?  NOTHING.

All he does is wait around, act flamboyantly gay (I’m pretty sure that his actions are insulting to homosexuals…), and yearn for the “perfect stage.”

We see glimpses of his power – he threatens Amshel, and gets away with it.  But never do we actually see him do anything.  He’s just standing around acting strong, helping the good guys for some unexplained reason, or, again, openly displaying his homosexuality.

When he asked to die at the end, I didn’t even question the action.  I just wanted him to go away, to get his non-actiony self out of the action anime.  In retrospect, it made little sense why he wanted to die.  Though he technically had no chance against Saya (Diva was dead), he could have helped during the fight or simply ran away (or even attacked, like Amshel later did).  But thank the heavens he asked for it.  SOMEBODY had to cut down this loser’s waste of screentime.

Duck (and cat) from Moetan

There comes a point where humor derived from parody succumbs to repetition.  In other words, ANNOYING DROOLING DUCK SCENE IS ANNOYING (and annoying cat with nosebleed scene is annoying as well).

I can deal with the magical change sequence being played every episode without fail, but is there really a need to copy and paste the same duck drooling scene in there every time?

What do the viewers want to see:

  • Ink transforming
  • Ink transforming + DROOLING DUCK SCENE OMG

You’d think that it’d be a no brainer…

Neighbor Boy from Minami-ke: Okawari

Like I tweet’d, and like RP seconded, this character sucks majorly.

Why is he even in the series?  It’s supposed to be a slice-of-life comedy, not some sort of elementary-school-level loli/shota (if he can be called that) romance/drama!

Where the first season had non-stop humor and great moments, the second season of Minami-ke stops every two minutes because of this one character.  Instead of an enjoyable comedy, we are presented with a half-comedy, half-failure that aims for drama with Fuyuki (neighbor boy).  What little impressive comedy there is in this season stops dead in its tracks when neighbor boy and his signature awkward scene pop up.

Neither I nor most people in the audience even care that Fuyuki moves away by the end of the season.  If anything, I/we celebrated his disappearance from the screen – and not a minute too soon, might I add!  He plagued this season from start to finish, and I can confidently say that I have not missed him.  Sayonara, annoying kid.

Male from Saki

Let’s be honest here.  Has this loser ever done something useful?  Just about the only thing that he’s ever done is introduce Saki to the mahjong club (hell, I’d rather that not have happened).  Other than that, he’s just moral support, comic relief, and male.

If you’ve watched Akagi, you’d probably know that there are absolutely no women in the entire anime, period.  I’m pretty sure that there aren’t even any women in the background as extras.  Now take that image of garjong, remove all the awesome, and insert a squealing chibi loli, and you’ve got Saki.

Kyoutarou has got to be one of the most useless characters in airing anime.  He’s part of the mahjong club, yet he never plays the actual game because he sucks too much.  He goes to the training camp for no training whatsoever, and follows the girls to the qualifiers only to buy tacos for a loli.  Why is he even in the club anymore?  Why is he the only male in the series that shows up often?  Does he have non-female friends?  Is he retarded?

I hope some weird drama happens and he transfers schools like a certain Neighbor Boy, ’cause he ain’t helping my already-terrible view of the show.

Why can't Saki be this good?

And that’s a wrap.  Of these four characters, two of them left their shows.  I have not yet finished Moetan and Saki is still airing, so there’s still hope that these pieces of fail will vanish.

tl;dr Useless characters are useless.

I’d say neighbor boy was necessarily horrible.

for the most part i agree with this post and i can honestly say the duck and cat made me feel weird and awkward everytime the 2 moe girls changed forms. also what scene is that blood and cigarettes from?

my only disagreement is with suzuka. i dont think she was a shitty character i just thought she was a highly traumatized bipolar female who didnt know how to see that it was possible for another guy to love her.

Oh, I won’t disagree, but I liked the fairies in zelda.

Also to the last post, Oishii can also be “Umae”, but mostly used by boys. Other than that I don’t see what else.

This really needs an edit option…

@Baka-Raptor: “This season has already took a nosedive, so let’s just make it as bad as we can” ?

@jersey: No, no, no. I’m talking about Suzaku from Code Geass! :p

@bob: Sorry, but wp doesn’t allow me to give editing skills to people. Or I’m too lazy to try and find a way.

    @simplybill: There’s a reason why I didn’t put her in this post.

There are shitty characters like Suzaku, hated characters like Makoto, and then there’s those annoying, useless characters like these four.

I’m pretty sure that she falls under the first category!

    @phossil: I couldn’t help it!

@orion: Does not get it, gomen. D:

I think you missed the point that the Drooling Duck and Nosebleeding Cat are PART of the mahou shoujo parody transformation sequence. It’s the same like saying, why do the transformation sequences always starts like that, it’s annoying, or something along those lines.

I agree on the Minami-ke neighbor boy not having a use at all. I mean really, what was the point having him? I don’t mind the loli/shota romance/drama but nothing really of that sort happened. We get some crappy “boohoo I’m leaving, bye” thing and that’s that. That was indeed fail.

I think they were going for the Makoto angle but chickened out at the last moment. The Minami-ke sisters covered in gushing Fuyuki blood. Would have been truly epic.

    DON’T SAY YOU ARE LAZY

    DATTE HONTOU WA CRAZY

  11. jerseyse410 says:

oh ok, well if its suzuka then i kinda agree, im only partially through S1, it got a little political/techy for my like so i put it on hold for a while.

as for the duck….since when is drool HD reflective?

  12. fangzhao says:

@npal: No, I didn’t miss that. It’s fine to have the duck drooling, but I’m really ticked off at how it’s the same exact scene over and over and over again. That may be a good way to use the transformation scene, but watching a duck/cat drooling/bleeding the same way every time is just annoying. Plus the point was made after episode 2.

And yes, that boy should have left a lot earlier and/or died before the series began. The only thing he was good for was… well, nothing.

@Roy: Wow. Now THERE’S some food for thought.

    @bob: Oh, you!

@jersey: If you’re there by now, you should see that Suzaku is really unwilling to accept anything besides his own ideas. Joining Zero is arguably a much better decision than to fight for Britannia for FIFTY EPISODES. He barely changes throughout two entire seasons, for crying out loud!

  13. jerseyse410 says:

    you didnt answer the moedrool!

  14. CCY says:

Wait, it all makes sense now.

Saki is just Akagi mirrored over the line y = x.

99% male cast becomes 99% female cast.
    Overwhelming GAR becomes overwhelming moe.
    Big noses become big breasts.
Strategy becomes LOL DEAD WALL HAX.
And good anime becomes crap anime.

    • fangzhao says:

      tru.dat

The thing that pisses me off about Saki is how there’s no epic strategy to anything. Saki uses luck, and we don’t even know what the others use to win. We just see the results of the games, not HOW the characters lose/win, or how they think during the game, or how other people offer up an arm on the game. And yet I’m still watching it, and not even for the moe appeal (Saki looks like a man, f’srs). I must be retarded.

  15. You know, I liked Tatl alot more than Navi, but thats just me.

    Also, “Salt Please!”
