Crappy Noses

aka “How to make the most avid of nose fetishers cringe in disgust

First, let’s start off with a picture of a well-drawn nose.

The size of the nose is proportional to the size of the face.
The nose is neither too small nor too big (“where is it?” nor “all I can see is a nose”).
The nose belongs to Mikoto.

And now, prepare yourself.
From here on out, there will be pictures of nasty, ugly, and downright horrendous noses that should never have been shown to the public flooding your screen.
You have been warned.

To set the mood, a heavy hitter steps up to bat.
Noses from… Kurokami.

How to draw a Kurokami nose

Step one: Draw a horizontal line.

Step two: Draw a dot.

Congratulations, you’ve just drawn a Kurokami nose!
Pat yourself on the back and hope to God that you’ll never have to see that kind of nose in another anime.

Seriously, the noses in Kurokami (for the males and Akane, at least) are just nasty.
There’s rarely any sense of an actual protruding object – rather, the huge bold line just gives the impression that half the nose has been cut off (just look at that Steiner picture up there… Ugh!).

Moving on, we have Munto‘s nose from Munto TV.

Hmn.  There is quite the discrepancy here.

At times, Munto has a sizable nose rivaling that of Okakura (RideBack)…

And at times, his nose is like a badly drawn cotangent graph.

Needless to say, Mighty Morphing Power Noses aren’t exactly the best way to draw noses in anime (especially not on one of the main characters).

You could probably tell by the first image, but… here’s some Akikan! noses…

However bad Akikan!‘s art may be, this nose of Gigolo’s is definitely an anomaly.
Normally, Akikan! noses are less like the straight line shown here.

As you can see, Akikan! noses have utterly crappy shading.

But enough of that.  Let’s get down to analyzing piece-by-piece the Akikan! nose.

The normal Akikan! nose.

There are two distinct parts to the Akikan! nose: the fish hook and the light area.

The “hook” part of the fish hook represents the nose “catching” the viewer’s gaze, and the light area represents the brillance that then blinds the viewers, causing us to shy away from the nose simply because it is too bright to see.

Oh, and if you turn it 90 degrees counterclockwise…

It looks like an eye!

And finally, we arrive at the king of all failnoseanimes, Chrome Shelled Regios.

"Why not? We both have the same noses!"

"Wait, please, Felli! Please get that nose away fro-"

The moment I saw the first nose in Regios, I knew that I would hate the noses for the rest of the series.

Basically, I just don’t like the idea of both sides of the noses being drawn so prominently.  The noses actually stand out rather than blend in with the overall character design, which is rarely, if ever, good.

And instead of bitching about Regios noses for another 50 lines,

Hahah, glad to see that this post was well received!

I could’ve sworn that somebody would do a counter-rant on Regio- Oh wait, in it for the Felli… right.

Oh, and on the topic of character design posts… I’m going to run out of specific things to bash pretty soon (there’s only so many things on a person’s face/body!), so I’d better come up with more weird things fast!
